The Montney Formation
The Montney Formation is the hub of oil and gas production in the western provinces. It is a multi-layered reservoir of siltstone and shale spanning a 130 000 square kilometer area stretching from Fort Nelson, B.C. to just south and west of Edmonton, AB. Exploration started in the 1950s but development did not begin until 2005 when advances in horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing made it possible to economically develop the siltstone resources.
The Montney contains an estimated 145 years of marketable natural gas resources based on Canada’s 2012 consumption constituting the largest deposit in the world.
The North America Current daily production is 1.59 mm boe/d, comprising almost 40% of Canada’s non-oil sands production (BMO, 2022). The expected ultimate potential of the Montney is 12,719 billion m3 (449 tcf) of marketable natural gas, 2,308 million m3 (14,521 m bbls) of marketable natural gas liquids and 179 million m3 (1,125 m bbls) of marketable oil (NEB, 2013).
This rich resource area plays an incredible role for the growth of Canada’s clean energy growth. It can satisfy a global demand with some of the world’s most sustainably produced and exported natural gas while improving Canada’s overall prosperity with continued job growth and maintaining respect for the traditional lands of Indigenous communities.
